Steel Bands

Maestros Steel Band was formed in 1975 at the mac(The Midlands Arts Centre). The group evolved from a ‘learning’ group into a ‘performance’ company, due to demand for a quality steel band in Birmingham. The band expanded, reaching its peak in mid 1980's, with over forty (40) members.

Over the years, the band has produced several players of national significance, winning national competitions and taking steel pan music to many areas of the world. Maestros were the first steel band to play in the ‘old’ Ukraine and the Middle East and since then has performed in Africa, the Caribbean and in many European countries.

Today, Maestros provides solo artistes or small groups, depending on the occasion. The Maestros trio is the most popular, ideal for weddings, parties or receptions.

The band has a lively repertoire ranging from the latest calypsos to relaxing popular music.

Maestros is lead by Norman ‘Panmaestro’ Stewart. Born in Wolverhampton, he was first introduced to steel pan at school where his enthusiasm and eagerness to master the skill of pan making and playing gained him a position in the original band at the mac.
Panmaestro has been leading the band since 1981 and continues to teach and perform whilst still offering workshops in schools and ‘makes and tunes’ steel pans for national and international markets.
